Menis E. Ketchum

Menis E. Ketchum was born in 1943 and raised in Wayne County, West Virginia. Educated in Wayne County public schools, Mr. Ketchum attended Ohio University (OU) in Athens, Ohio, from 1960-1964. While at OU, he played Varsity Baseball and was a member of the 1964 Mid-American Conference Championship Baseball Team. Mr. Ketchum returned to West Virginia to enroll in the West Virginia University School of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia. While at West Virginia University (WVU), Mr. Ketchum served as a contributing writer (1965-66) and Associate Editor (1966-67) for the West Virginia Law Review and received his Juris Doctorate from the WVU College of Law in 1967.

Upon his return to Huntington after graduating from law school, Mr. Ketchum joined his father, Chad W. Ketchum (1911-1998) in the practice of law with the law firm of Greene, Ketchum & Baker in 1967. For almost 40 years now, Mr. Ketchum has litigated various types of cases, including, but not limited to Insurance Defense, Maritime, Federal Employers' Liability Act (FELA). Mr. Ketchum continues to practice law today at Greene, Ketchum, Bailey & Tweel, where he has been the senior partner since 1980.

Recognized continuously since 1989 in The Best Lawyers in America, Mr. Ketchum was formerly a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Throughout his legal career, he has published legal articles and presented numerous continuing legal education seminars to bar associations, adjustor associations and legal assistant associations.

In addition to his practice of law, Mr. Ketchum serves today as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He has been a member of the University's Board of Governors since 2002. He also continues to serve as a board member for the Public Defender Corporation for the Sixth and Twenty-fourth Judicial Circuits. In the past, Mr. Ketchum has served on the Huntington Urban Renewal Authority, participated in the Vision Shared Health Care Team, a state-wide program to develop for West Virginia a focus team toward reducing the medically uninsured in West Virginia and has been appointed to the Mine Safety Task Force by the Governer.

Mr. Ketchum married the former Judy Varnum from Huntington, West Virginia, in 1966, and they have three children, Kelli Morgan, Bert Ketchum (also a partner at Greene, Ketchum, Bailey & Tweel and the third generation of Ketchums to practice law with the firm), and Chad Ketchum. Mr. Ketchum and his wife have six grandchildren.

Menis E. Ketchum elected to West Virginia Supreme Court.
Menis E. Ketchum garnered the most votes in the 2008 general election to win a seat on the West Virginia Supreme Court. Mr. Ketchum's grandfather was a politician in Wayne County decades ago. His father started the family law firm. Now, Mr. Ketchum will take his years of law experience and apply it to the state Supreme Court. Mr. Ketchum helped build a prominent litigation law firm which will continue his legacy as trial lawyers fighting for civil justice.
